That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Once upon a timeWe’ve used “Tell Your Story Visually” as a tag line at B & Company for a while now, and for most of that time, I’ve been meaning to write something about what that actually means from a design perspective. It seems my procrastination paid off, because while I was doing other stuff, John McWade over at Before & After’s blog, Design Talk, wrote the very piece I’d been thinking about. And John did a much better job of it than I would have. Here’s an excerpt:

One gets the impression watching the news that data is what matters (Rogers’ QB rating is 129). But data is mainly for statisticians, and not real. Story is how human beings actually experience life.

And what is a story? It’s a life lived. Story is about risk and hope and fear and struggle and love and loss. It’s about heart and soul and the real reasons behind things.

What’s all this have to do with design?

Everything.

That’s my story for today. What’s yours? :-)

So your web designer bailed… Now what?

It can be scary to suddenly realize that the person you trusted to handle all of the aspects of your online presence is moving on, or worse, has already disappeared. But, just because your web guy bailed on you, it doesn’t mean the end of the world is coming. First, step back and take a deep breath. Companies part ways with webmasters all the time. (By the way, a webmaster is the person who maintains your site, and might or might not have been your web developer, the one who created your site). Let’s run down what you should do from the easiest scenario to the harder ones. Continue reading

Design sells.

Michael Graves Tea KettleDesign sells. Just ask Michael Graves or Steve Jobs. Both have built their success by using design to their best advantage. Think about the last time you made a purchase. If you had a choice between two products with the same basic purpose, features and price, you probably bought the one that looked better, right? That’s the power of design at work.

Design by itself isn’t enough to sell an inferior product or create a market where there’s not one, but it certainly can influence a decision between two choices that are essentially the same otherwise. And often, people will pay substantially more for something just because it looks cool. So isn’t it worth it to consider how the design of your marketing materials and your brand is working (or not working) for your business?

Every Door Direct Mail

We went to a short seminar this week to learn about one of the coolest new postal service initiatives I’ve seen in quite a while. It’s called Every Door Direct Mail, and although it could be a boon to everyone who uses direct mail, it seems particularly suited to small business owners. It’s a faster, easier and cheaper way to target local markets. Gone is the cost of purchasing and maintaining a postage permit. Gone are expensive, out-of-date mailing lists. Gone are annoying bounce-backs (where you essentially get the pleasure of throwing your own money away).

Taking their place is a system that allows you to target locations by city, neighborhood, zip-code and postal route. You define the parameters, the USPS reach tool shows your options and you pick the final details. Your mailing can be as small as a one-time 200 piece mailing or as large as 5,000 pieces (per station) per day—no addresses needed. Continue reading

WordPress & Social Networking

Photo of WordPress LogoWe recently attended a seminar on WordPress and social media networking and how it can be used to enhance your marketing efforts and website traffic. Very interesting stuff was discussed. It used to be that blogging software packages were just for blogs. That’s changing and more and more blogging packages are becoming full-blown turn-key CMS systems; powerful and easy to use. How can this help the average business owner? Stay tuned to find out.

Improved website going online…

We’ve decided to make the leap to WordPress for our web presence. This is due in no small part to a seminar we attended that convinced us that WordPress has the brightest future of the blogger-turned-CMS software packages. Since this site isn’t fully operational yet (I love Star Wars quotes), please see our full capabilities and portfolio at our current website at www.bcodesign.com. [This site is now armed and fully operational.] Thank you!
